Charity League's $428K gift pushes Corpus Christi PAL complex toward completion

A Charity League of Corpus Christi donation will finish bleachers, batting cages and equipment for the rebuilt PAL youth baseball and softball complex.

A youth sports complex in Corpus Christi that has been under reconstruction since 2025 is now within sight of completion thanks to a $428,485 donation announced this week. The Corpus Christi Police Department Police Athletic League received the check from the Charity League of Corpus Christi, and the local 3NEWS broadcast at KIII captured the handover at the new facility.

The gift will fund the finishing pieces of the rebuilt complex, including batting cages, bleachers and equipment for both players and umpires. Deputy Chief Donald Moore, who runs CCPD's Operations Bureau, said the Police Athletic League was conceived to give children a place to play sports without the high fees that gate most youth leagues. The project, he said, began with a vision from Driscoll Children's Hospital and grew from there. The current build is, in his words, literally a whole new facility. New bathrooms, concession stands, fields and parking lot replace what was there before. The new fields use artificial turf with upgraded soil work designed to extend the playable life of the surfaces by several years.

The Charity League of Corpus Christi has been raising the money since October 2025, drawing on community donations, business sponsors and foundation grants. Charity League President Kristen Sterett called the campaign a community effort, and noted that the underlying programmes connect officers and local youth through sports leagues and positive community involvement. That secondary mission, building relationships between police and the children who use the complex, is what separates this build from a standard parks-and-recreation refresh.

For the Coastal Bend, the timing matters. Underprivileged children in the area now have access to a facility that, on paper, compares favourably with the kind of pay-to-play complexes most youth athletes in larger metros depend on. Construction crews are still finishing parking lot work, and officials expect the completed facility to open more programming slots for kids and families in coming seasons. The combination of healthcare partnership, municipal alignment and local philanthropy is a model worth watching for anyone planning a similar build in another mid-sized Texas community.
